It should not be construed to indicate that use of the drug is safe, appropriate, or effective for you. Consult your healthcare professional before using this drug.

Uses
Naprosyn ® (Naproxen) is an anti-inflammatory NSAID used for the management of mild to moderate pain, fever, and inflammation. They work by reducing the levels of prostaglandins, chemicals that are responsible for pain, fever and inflammation. Other members of this class include ibuprofen (Motrin), indomethacin (Indocin), nabumetone (Relafen) and several others.
Naproxen was approved by the FDA in December, 1991.

How to take this medication
Naprosyn (Naproxen) comes as a tablet to take by mouth. The usual adult dose is 250-500 mg twice daily using regular naproxen tablets. The usual dose for Naprosyn controlled release tablets is 750 to 1000 mg given once daily. Naprosyn (Naproxen) should be given with food to reduce upset stomach. Take Naprosyn (Naproxen) with a full glass of water and do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Naprosyn (Naproxen).

Side Effects
The most common side effects from Naprosyn (Naproxen) are rash, ringing in the ears, headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, fluid retention and shortness of breath. Naprosyn (Naproxen) also may cause stomach and intestinal bleeding and ulcers. Sometimes, stomach ulceration and intestinal bleeding can occur without any abdominal pain. Black tarry stools, weakness, and dizziness upon standing may be the only signs of the bleeding. People who are allergic to other NSAIDs should not use Naprosyn (Naproxen).

Contact your Doctor immediately if you experience severe stomach pain, swelling of hands/feet, sudden or unexplained weight gain, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), vision changes, rapid/pounding heartbeat, easy bruising/bleeding, change in amount of urine, severe headache, very stiff neck, mental/mood changes, or persistent sore throat or fever. may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines.

Precautions
In certain conditions (e.g., arthritis), it may take upto 2 weeks, taken regularly, for
Naprosyn (Naproxen) to work. Do not stop taking Naprosyn (Naproxen) without checking with your doctor. Naprosyn (Naproxen) may alter certain lab test results. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use Naprosyn (Naproxen).

Naprosyn (Naproxen) may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Naprosyn (Naproxen). Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. Do not take Naprosyn (Naproxen) if you ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to aspirin, ibuprofen, celecoxib, or any other medicine used to treat pain, fever, swelling, or arthritis. Daily use of alcohol and tobacco, especially when combined with Naprosyn (Naproxen), will increase your risk for stomach bleeding.

The elderly may be more sensitive to the effects of
Naprosyn (Naproxen), especially stomach bleeding and kidney effects.

If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Naprosyn (Naproxen) during pregnancy; Naprosyn (Naproxen) should only be used when clearly needed during the first 6 months of pregnancy. Naprosyn (Naproxen) is not recommended for use during the last 3 months of pregnancy due to its potential for fetal harm. Naprosyn (Naproxen) is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding, check with your doctor of pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Drug Interactions
Naprosyn (Naproxen) may reduce the blood pressure lowering effects of blood pressure medications. This may occur because prostaglandins play a role in the regulation of blood pressure. Individuals taking oral blood thinners or anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) should avoid Naprosyn (Naproxen) because it also thins the blood, and excessive blood thinning may lead to bleeding.

When Naprosyn (Naproxen) is used in combination with aminoglycosides (e.g., gentamicin) the blood levels of the aminoglycoside may increase, presumably because the elimination of aminoglycosides from the body is reduced. This may lead to more aminoglycoside-related side effects.
Naprosyn (Naproxen) may increase the blood levels of lithium (Eskalith) by reducing the excretion of lithium by the kidneys. Increased levels of lithium may lead to lithium toxicity.

Naprosyn (Naproxen) can aggravate paranoid symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, and increase symptoms of mania in patients with manic-depressive disease. Cimetidine (Tagamet) can increase blood levels of Naprosyn (Naproxen) and its side effects. The sedative effect of the medication can possibly impair the mental and physical abilities required for driving or operating machinery.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. The following symptoms indicate an overdose: dizziness; fainting; fast heartbeat.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Chronic pain treatment : One of the most serious problems in modern medicine is the undertreatment of patients in chronic pain. More than 30 million patients suffer from chronic pain, and seven million of them cannot relieve their pain without opioids (narcotics), but only few doctors in the country are willing to prescribe them, according to the National Chronic Pain Outreach Association. Today's massive denial of pain medication is a consequence of the social, regulatory and law enforcement climate created by the War on Drugs. Doctors can suffer loss of license or even incarceration, when the inevitable mistake of providing medicine to a dishonest patient who may be misusing or diverting medication occurs. The climate has led to a situation in which most physicians are incorrectly trained in pain management and under- or non-treatment of pain is the norm. Doctors who treat pain correctly typically must exceed the usual prescribed dosages, and in so doing draw the scrutiny of state medical boards and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The DEA demands that doctors and pharmacies regularly provide them with records of every prescription for controlled substances that is written or filled. The fate of pain patients in the "police state of medicine" is grim. Day after day of constant torment drives many to depression or even suicide. Many patients receive enough medicine to provide relief for four hours out of the day, and have to decide which 20 hours of the day they will spend in extreme pain. Frightened doctors sometimes "fire" patients, cutting them off from pain meds suddenly, thereby putting them at risk for shock or withdrawal. And those patients receiving adequate prescriptions live in fear that their doctors could be put out of business by the government or frightened into cutting them off. Former addicts as well as former prisoners are in the worst situation of all, being automatically suspect -- but pain patients from these backgrounds need and deserve proper treatment nonetheless.

Symptomatic treatment of osteoarthrosis with Naprosyn ( Naproxen )
A new oral Naprosyn ( Naproxen ) retard preparation (750 mg once daily) was compared with a standard commercial formula (375 mg BID) in a population of 60 patients affected by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. An assessment was made of the effects on the clinical parameters, inflammation indexes (ESR, PCR, urinary hydroxyproline) and general tolerance parameters after one month of treatment. Both treatments induced a similar improvement in the clinical and laboratory parameters and were shown to be equally safe. However, tolerance at a gastro-enteric level was, better with the retard preparation.

Naprosyn ( Naproxen ) disposition in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis
Chronic liver disease is known to alter the absorption and disposition of many drugs. To assess the influence of chronic alcoholic liver disease on the disposition of Naprosyn ( Naproxen ), we administered the drug both as a single dose and to steady state to individuals with alcoholic cirrhosis and to same number of healthy controls. Results demonstrate that Naprosyn ( Naproxen ) dosing be reduced by at least half in patients with chronic alcoholic liver disease. In the absence of data to the contrary, this recommendation can be extended to individuals with other forms of hepatic disease.

Chemistry and pharmacology of Naprosyn ( Naproxen )
The need for a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent effective in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases with reduced side effects when compared to existing drugs led us to develop Naprosyn ( Naproxen ) which is a highly effective anti-inflammatory, analgetic, and antipyretic agent administered orally. In the rat yeast-induced paw edema and the rat carrageenin paw edema analgetic assays the test compound was 10 and 20 times more effective than aspirin, respectively. A yeast-induced pyresis model in the rat indicated that Naprosyn ( Naproxen ) was 22 times more potent than the standard aspirin.
